Nabors activism case weakens, bankers say

John Delta, COO at Management CV, a research firm that specializes in the analysis of company managements, said Petrello has moved slowly to implement the goals he outlined when he took over as chief executive in October 2011.
Delta notes Petrello has said on the record that he wants to reduce Nabors’ net debt to 25%, from about 40% currently, by the end of 2013. But given the current pace of debt reduction, it will be challenging to meet this goal, he said.

Nokia Seen Posting Q2 Loss, As Troubles Mount

Nokia was expected to report a loss for this quarter and next as it cuts prices to try to prevent more customers defecting to rivals' smartphones, a Reuters poll found.
In February, Nokia also unveiled a new bonus-package directly linked to its share price for chief executive Stephen Elop, hired last September from Microsoft to turn the company's fortunes.
"To me, that was a gamechanger. He gets paid as I will as a shareholder," said Renny Ponvert, chief executive of top leaders skills research firm Management CV Inc.

Say Goodbye To Gains In AMD Until Dirk Meyer Is Replaced

When CEO Dirk Meyer took the reins at chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices in 2008, the question was “Can he turn things around?” After steering the company through a challenging time and seemingly getting things on the right path, his ouster Monday has investors wondering what went wrong.
Tuesday morning Ponvert told me he was very surprised by Meyer’s ouster. “We would have pointed to Meyer as an example of a great operational turnaround,” he said. “We thought he was the antithesis of his predecessor [Hector Ruiz], a classic media darling who delivered weak results.”

Beware Superstar CEOs

The high-profile outside hire plays well in the media and gives shares a boost, but the effect is fleeting. Americans love stars. Celebrities, athletes, politicians and, yes, corporate executives. Nearly 20% of the 3,000 largest publicly traded companies in the U.S. change their CEO or CFO in a typical year, and the chance to put a big name in the C-suite is alluring to corporate boards, says Renny Ponvert, the founder and chief executive of Management CV, a firm that analyzes management teams and executive changes for a client base of institutional investors. One of the biggest mistakes boards can make is reaching outside company ranks for a big-name executive who turns out to be a poor fit.

Measuring A Honcho From Top To Bottom

Do companies with high-performing stocks also have great managers? And can you measure this management savvy and correlate it to future stock-price moves? Renny Ponvert, founder and chief executive officer of Management CV, thinks so. Ponvert says an investment ranking system developed by his Bethesda, Md., research firm shows a clear match between management performance and a company's stock movements over time. "If you analyze management ability, you have an 18-month advance look at the profit and loss columns of these companies. Management comprises the biggest non-industry factor affecting performance over time," Ponvert said.
