Tuesday morning Ponvert told me he was very surprised by Meyer’s ouster. “We would have pointed to Meyer as an example of a great operational turnaround,” he said. “We thought he was the antithesis of his predecessor [Hector Ruiz], a classic media darling who delivered weak results.”

Renny Ponvert, founder and chief executive officer of Management CV, thinks so. Ponvert says an investment ranking system developed by his Bethesda, Md., research firm shows a clear match between management performance and a company's stock movements over time. "If you analyze management ability, you have an 18-month advance look at the profit and loss columns of these companies. Management comprises the biggest non-industry factor affecting performance over time," Ponvert said.
